What is the www.DoGoSee.com Project all about?

“Go to Schinke Strasse, *, ***** Berlin, press the buzzer and ask to photograph the artist with the red hair, Leo. If he’s not in, please photograph his door.”An interactive, photographic, travel, mapping, research project.

www.DoGoSee.com explores new methods of creatively mapping out space. It is interactive with the central idea that visitors to the website can tell us where to go in cities that we visit. When a post is sent to the blog we receive it on our mobile phones, search out the request, then photograph it and upload it live to the blog. During each project the website refreshes constantly as we upload the results of these requests. Simultaneously, we use Global Positioning Systems to record a physical trace of our journey; this information takes shape on a Google Map, and gives visitors to the site a direct link to the images we have captured on our quests, based on their suggestions.

Blogging and mapping Berlin, Leeds & Highbury.

Visit Thackeray Medical Museum. The project began in April 2006 when visitors to the website, following an e-mail invitation, sent us on an exploratory journey of the streets of Berlin drawn out in response to their posts on the blog. Through every suggestion that was made the project began to form into something new. And so, it was decided, that the Berlin experience would not be a one-off. Throughout July 2006 we ran projects that explored the streets of Leeds & Highbury. With every new suggestion www.DoGoSee.com evolved and as we subsequently explored each city we began to hand over control of the project to an increasingly imaginative public. This gave way to truly interactive and unpredictable events, and that is what has made it so fun!
The suggestions that we have received so far have been as varied as each of the cities. We have been guided to a cemetery in Berlin, where we found watering cans neatly padlocked to a post; doorways that hide underground drinking dens in Highbury; viaducts that secretly transport the river Aire under Leeds Station; and instructions to follow that have no fixed destination but allow the journey to unfold only revealing it’s destination once it has ended. Each of these journeys is traced on the website revealing the routes that were taken and the location where each photograph was taken.

The next project, Journey: Departure Lounge at East Street Arts.

Running alongside the development of East Street Arts Journey: Departure Lounge, we are developing a new stage of The www.DoGoSee.com Project. This is the beta launch of an audio map of Leeds and Berlin. Previous participants in the project have been contacted to record narratives of the city. The sound clips will be available to download via mobile phone making it possible for you to roam the streets and hear a tale, or two.

If you did not participate in the project but have a great story about Leeds or Berlin just click here to be processed through to our online check-in form.
